Steam Locomotives

Oigawa Railway(Dai-Tetsu) is the only railway in Japan running Steam Locomotives throughout the year. Enjoy the view of the vast green tea fields along the Oi River, which flows from the Southern Alps, while listening to the wheels squeaking; a very special experience!

How to enjoy the Steam Locomotives

4 different Steam Locomotives

All four steam locomotives running on Oigawa Railway were made back in the 1930s. Listen to their whistles - can you tell the difference?

 Going retro

Some of the passenger carriages are from the 1950s. Wooden seats and old fans tell a story from the Showa period. Occasionally they are used for films and TV shootings for its unique atmosphere.

Conductors on Steam Locomotives

Your ride on the Steam Locomotives will be joined by conductors who will add a bit more fun to your trip. Not only will they explain the history of SLs (as they are called in Japanese), but will entertain you with music to make your journey a special one.

Bento Boxes

If you are taking the Steam Locomotives at Shin-Kanaya Station, don't forget to pick up your bento boxes from the shops. They are full of local goodness and will put a smile on your face once you lift the lid up.

Other services

There are some items you can only buy on the Steam Locomotives. When you hear the shopping cart approaching, take a closer look!
